Well, here I go with my first post!
This is the first year I am teaching 5th Grade since I've been teaching at my school. In previous years I only taught Pre-K through 2nd Grade. This year I'm not teaching Pre-K, but I'm teaching K-5, minus the 4th Grade.
I'm always on the hunt for new projects for the older grades because I don't have a library of lessons for them yet! My 5th Graders really enjoyed making these Huichol Yarn Paintings.
Children worked on cardboard pieces cut anywhere from 6x6 to 8x8. Some were rectangular and some were square depending on their chosen image. After discussing the history of the Huichol Tribe, students were given examples of Huichol symbols that they could use in their artwork. I asked them to use the symbols as a guide, but to add their own personal touch to the drawings to make them unique. In the end, everyone had a different design! My first intention was to have the students cover the entire cardboard in yarn. However, after assessing how intricately they were working on their projects, we all decided that painting the backgrounds would look great too, and would save us some time. Still, there were some children who wanted to cover the entire surface with yarn. This was okay too!
